Physiotherapy isn't just for dogs and horses. Cats, rabbits and other small and exotic pets get arthritis, injuries and neurological problems too, and they often hide pain well. Treating them at home, in familiar surroundings, keeps sessions calm and short.
Cats hide arthritis
In a study of 100 cats over 12 years old, 90% showed degenerative joint disease on X-ray. Hardie et al., JAVMA, 2002
Signs to watch for
- Jumping less, or only onto lower surfaces
- Grooming less: a scruffy or matted coat
- Toileting outside the litter tray
- Sleeping more and playing less
- Being more irritable when handled
Easy changes at home
- A litter tray with at least one low side
- Steps or a ramp up to favourite high spots
- Soft beds in quiet, draught-free places
- Food and water within easy reach

How we treat cats
Cat sessions are short and go at your cat's pace. We use gentle manual therapy, laser therapy and play-based exercises, and we'll suggest changes at home that make daily life easier.
Rabbits and other small pets
Rabbits are prey animals and tend to hide pain. Vets use the Rabbit Grimace Scale, five facial signs, alongside other checks to help spot it:
- Narrowed eyes
- Flattened cheeks
- Nostrils drawn into a V shape, rather than a U
- Stiff whiskers that lose their natural downward curve
- Ears curled tighter or turned towards the back
Keating et al., PLoS One, 2012; NC3Rs. If you notice these, contact your vet. We treat rabbits and other exotic pets with rehab adapted to the species and the individual.
Frequently asked questions
Will my cat cope with physio?
Most cats do well when treated at home. We keep sessions short, go at your cat's pace and stop if they've had enough.
Do you treat rabbits and other exotic pets?
Yes. We treat a range of exotic pets, adapting our approach to each species.
Does my pet need a vet referral?
A referral isn't always required, but we work closely with your vet and encourage you to speak to them first.
